So you want to be a Model?
Well, you have picked a competitive business that requires a lot of hard work, patience, and the ability to take rejection.
Here is where you start…
As a commercial model you will need some professional pictures.
Your modeling portfolio is most important; It’s your marketing tool’ It’s how you will show agencies that you have the ability to act and portray characters.
Don’t spend a fortune… ! All an agent will need to see is some good headshots and full length body shots. Then if they are interested they will take care of the rest, you will then naturally build up your portfolio as you work.
Jefferson studios offer Headshots for as little as £40.
Another way to get experience and free photo-shoot’s is to list with on-line websites like Model Mayhem, you can upload your images promote yourself and collaborate with photographers. Working as (time for print) means that you give your time in return for prints. You can also search for casting and paid modeling in your area.
How can you get started in modelling?
There are many different types of modelling and some of them require different approaches, let’s assume that you are interested in being either a fashion model.
Register with agencies, remember everyone else wants to be on their books too, they get many hundreds of applications and accept very few of them. Some agents are likely to have criteria that you simply don’t match, for example height, weight, size and age.
All you usually need to do is to send them a few pictures of your face and your personal details and statistics. If they are interested they will contact you and ask you to attend an interview, If they accept you they may offer you a contract.
They will then arrange for you to be photographed by their photographer. They will then send you on auditions for modelling work. None of this will cost you a penny, like all reputable agencies they make all their money by deducting their commission from your modelling earnings.
The smaller genuine agencies will probably do less to promote you than the industry leaders, and although they won’t ask you to pay them any fees they may ask you to provide them with, photographs and model cards. Model cards are a simple double-side printed card, around A5 size, with 4 of 5 photos of you, your vital statistics and your contact details.
Why do you have to pay for the model cards and photos? Well, there are 2 reasons for this. Firstly, a small agency won’t be making as much commission from you as a larger agency would and really can’t afford to subsidies you and secondly, there are an awful lot of time wasters around. A good way of weeding out timewasters is by making them put their hands in their pockets to prove that they are serious about modelling. At the same time, although they are making you spend your money, none of it is going into their own pockets so you know that they are a genuine agency and not a scam merchant. If, however, the agency suggests that you should use their own photographer you should walk away, it is probably a scam.
Watch out for rogues?
The simple rule is this, If an agent or photographer is asking you for money to start your career (walk away), good agents make money from you not the other way around, If an agency is interested in representing you they will take on all of the initial costs of organizing photos, getting your hair cut, etc. You might have to pay them back later for some of this but a reputable agency will be the one who splashes out – not you.

Additionally, we offer a family shoot for parents to jump in the photo with their children if they wish. We make sure that when you attend your kids’ memorable school events, you can save those memories forever through our special school photography packages. To make it more convenient, we offer school shoots on the weekends when parents are off from work.
Recent School Shoot At West Leigh Infant School
Our team led by Malcolm set up a mobile studio in the hall of West Leigh Infant School on a Saturday. Our mobile studio is large enough to accommodate groups of x to 15 people. Each family shoot lasted only about 15 minutes during which we managed to capture a nice selection of images for these families to choose from. The shoots were booked in via the event organizer Ellie, a member of the school PTA.
Important Details About Our School Photography Package
- All images from the shoot will be printed and returned to the organizer in a week’s time.
- We use a proof system to track all orders, so parents can either order online or via phone.
- Orders can also be returned back to the school with packs of prints starting at £12.00.
- We pay a set commission to schools from all orders taken so the school can earn some extra money. It’s a win-win for school, parents and students, and us!
- We offer the event coverage as a one-off service as well so schools are not bound to use us for individual school or class photos, although we would love to cover those as well.

Jefferson Studios Covers Bethany & Olivia’s Big Day
Bethany and Olivia recently tied the knot at the beautiful Natural Retreats Yorkshire Dales. Friends and family were invited to stay at the location with breathtakingly stunning views. The venue is a perfectly relaxing and peaceful setting in the Dales for a wedding celebration with one’s nearest and dearest. It spreads 55 acres in the pristine countryside of Swaledale and although rurally located, is only a short walk from the beautiful town of Richmond.
Our photographers Jeff and Malcolm were asked by the brides to cover the wedding. They were hosted in a beautiful lodge at the same location. Luckily for us and the brides, the wedding day fell on a mild October day, providing the Jefferson photography team with the perfect combination of beautiful location and a complimenting weather.
Jeff and Malcolm were able to capture the beautiful brides throughout the day starting from morning preparation shots right up to the main ceremony, food and drinks and some post-wedding shots. All lodges on the Natural Retreats of Yorkshire Dales are located close by which allowed our team to manage the logistics easily.
All in all, it was a fantastic event that presented us countless opportunities to capture the nature and scenic beauty of the venue as well as the joy, festivity, smiles and bliss of a beautiful wedding.
Best wishes to Bethany and Olivia for their new journey!
Roddy & Andrew their story…
They met at St Silas church in Glasgow. Or first few weeks together involved eating lots, gyming together and trying to study for our final year at university.
Andrew proposed on a cold winters day in the midst of the beautiful sanctity of the Kensington roof gardens (complete with real flamingos).
We had the most amazing wedding day, which was captured beautifully by our photographer Jeff (Jefferson Studios Bristol). We got married in our church, Oasis church, Waterloo, London, which we decorated with bunting made by Andrew’s fair hands. Andrew’s brother John made our awesome ‘naked’ wedding cake of four tiers… tiffin, chocolate cake, carrot cake and lemon drizzle. We made all our own table arrangements that were scattered with cacti favours on rustic wooden benches. The day was a celebration of our love for each other and our love for God, and was perfect surrounded by all or friends and family.
Photo booths are a great way to get some memorable photos with your loved ones, friends or colleagues. Whether it’s a wedding, birthday, graduation party or a corporate annual dinner, having a photo booth at the event is always a plus.

The wedding day is one of the most special days in our lives. It is a day to celebrate the next phase of our life with the person that we love the most. The best way to forever store the amazing memories of this day and make it all the more special is to capture it by using the services of a professional wedding photographer.
This is exactly what Bride and Groom, Kelly and Steve chose to do by hiring Jefferson Studio to cover their big day in style. The event took place at St. Mary’s Church in Clevedon and the reception was held at the Best Western Walton Park Hotel. It was the perfect choice of location for the couple as well as for our wedding photography team. The location offers breathtaking views of the Bristol Channel with the cliff-side gardens and panoramic views across the Severn Estuary adding to the appeal. The Victorian architecture of the hotel was the cherry on top of the cake as it provided our team some amazing opportunities to work our magic.
The couple also went to the nearby Clevedon pier to take some pictures themselves and who can blame them – after all, it was named as “The most beautiful pier in England” by none other than Sir John Betjeman and makes for the perfect wedding photography spot in Bristol area.
